  • Buzz Line: "The Tamil Tigers are not the Lion's cousins"
  • Eagle Eye: Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, or Pearl of the Indian Ocean, is home to around twenty million people. After over two thousand years of rule by local kingdoms, parts of Sri Lanka were colonized by the Dutch, Portuguese and the British, and eventually Colombo gained independence from London in 1948. Avoid the north and be careful everywhere of the Tamil Tigers - a separatist militant group who fights to create the independent state of Tamil Eelam in the East and North of Sri Lanka. They have little respect for human life.
  • Hot Spots: Sri Pada (Adams Peak) to climb the 4,800 steps to the holy top, Negombo, Colombo, Kandy and area around Kandy, Nuwara Eliya.
  • The Low-down: Get to the top of Sri Pada (Adam's Peak) before sunrise to have a surreal Buddist/Hindu/Christian religious experience. This is a major Pilgrim's route so avoid holy days or you will be run over. Start your hike up the 4,800 steps no later than 3:30am to be at the top by 5:30 to 6:00am. Tip...the hike down is worse than going up! Take warm clothes.
